Far and Away
A hand padded me on my shoulder. “Salaaam! Are you coming to Alizadeh’s too?” an excited soft feminine voice asked me in Persian. Two nights before, I had met M. in a French restaurant over drinks with a mutual friend for the first time. Now, she was all dressed up: formal overcoat, dress pants and high heel shoes. “Gorgeous”, I thought while being puzzled seeing her at that moment. I was looking at Carnegie Hall’s display window to learn about its classic concerts and didn’t expect to see any one there when I heard her voice. “Alizadeh?!!” I asked in surprise. “He is performing in the Carnegie tonight. He is really good!” She smiled. “Wow, Alizadeh in Carnegie Hall! But not really, I was passing by and just wanted to check out its program for later days.” In fact, I was coming back from Princeton, where I stayed an unplanned night with some old friends. I was just wondering in streets and happened to be around there. In blue jeans, casual jacket, sneakers, with a backpack and also unshaved, I wasn’t exactly dressed for Carnegie Hall. She went on cheerfully: “I think it is sold out, but I will find you a ticket” and ran towards her friends a few feet away. Her friends didn’t have any extras. “Let’s go to the box office and see if there is any cancellation” she suggested. “No, you go ahead in and I will see what I can do.” I gracefully managed to say. I wasn't sure what exactly I would like to do. I went to the box office around the corner and saw a short line for the canceled tickets. "If I wait a couple of minutes, I sure can get in". I’d seen Alizadeh’s performance few times before and I really liked it. “Naaaa! will bring up more bitter memories. All I want is to be away from these things for a while”, I said to myself and stepped down into the subway station on the sidewalk. March 31, 2007 Link . 0 Comments
